Musik-Besprechung - Aidan Moffat & The Best-Ofs - How To Get To Heaven From Scotland

How To Get To Heaven From Scotland ist die Frage, die sich Aidan Moffat, ehemals Arab Strap, derzeit musikalisch auf seiner neusten Platte stellt. Diesmal singt Moffat zur Abwechselung mal nicht über das triste Leben und um "more whinging from Glasgow's alcoholic lo-fi miserabilst", stattdessen beschreibt der Sänger das Album als "The perfect Valentine's Day gift for a loved one." Zu dem Moffat dann passenderweise gleich eine entsprechende Limited Edition des Albums erdachte, mehr dazu später.

Die Liebe ist also einmal mehr das große Thema. Und unter dem Namen Aidan Moffat & The Best-Ofs hat Moffat nun eine Art Band gegründet, um eben Songs über die Liebe zu schreiben, so einfach scheint das: "I decided it was time that I attempted to write some positive love songs, which is incredibly difficult to do if you want to avoid cliché and repetition. You have to try to make them both personal and universal […] you have to try to forget other people are going to hear them while also making sure it will appeal to an audience." Wobei ganz so einfach ist es dann doch nicht, denn von Band will man hier nicht sprechen: die Best-Ofs sind mehr eine Art "open-door club where anyone with talent for something I like the sound of is welcome."

Beatboxend und recht sparsam startet das Album mit Lover's Song, bevor es sich gleich anschließend mit Big Blonde leichtfüßig Richtung Country wendet. Und wie schon berichtet, Moffats Platte lässt die Düsternis und Tristes hinter sich, stattdessen sind Tracks wie das folkige Atheist's Lament oder speziell Oh Men! geradezu ausgelassen fröhlich, wenn auch nicht übertrieben fröhlich. Dafür sorgen Tracks wie A Scenic Route To The Island Of Ewe, welches alles andere als ein grundsolider und einfach zugänglicher Popsong ist: "I'm not interested in pop shine anyway."

That's Just Love ist Moffats Alleingang, bei dem er die Best-Ofs ganz weglässt und alle Instrumente selbst einspielt. Eine Art Experiment, wie er selber gern zugibt, dass auch eher als B-Seite hätte Verwendung finden können. Ein Überbleibsell aus Arab Strap Zeiten stellt anschließend Ballad Of The Unsent Letter da, "If you know my previous work then it will probably come as no surprise that the man in this ballad is me, but I think it's the first time I've sang about myself in third person. It was written years ago after Arab Strap's last American tour."

Now I Know I'm Right behandelt die bisher drei wichtigsten Frauen in Moffats Leben und auch The Last Kiss verfolgt Moffat das ewige Thema Liebe weiter. Welches auch in Lullaby For Unborn Child verhandelt wird: "A song of about the hope and fear of impending fatherhood, featuring my unborn (at the time) son's heartbeat, as recorded in the midwife's room." Living With You Now präsentiert weiter die leicht melancholische Sicht Moffats auf das Leben und My Goodbye ist letztlich ein leiser Abschied, der so vielleicht auch gar nicht erst den Weg auf die Platte gefunden hätte: "This started off as a mess about to fill some time on a rare day when we'd finished what we wanted to do early, so I hummed a little tune and the wonderful Stevie Jones and Alan Barr seemed to understand what I meant."

Neben der regulären Ausgabe ist How To Get To Heaven From Scotland ebenfalls als Limited Edition erhältlich: neben dem Album auf CD und Vinyl bekommt man eine 7" auf der sich Cover von Sonny and Chers I Got You Babe und Glen Campbells Love Is Not A Game befinden, dazu noch eine 5 Track CD EP mit vier alternativen Versionen von Albumstücken und einem Bonustrack; des weiteren beinhaltet das Set ein How To Get To Heaven From Scotland Spiel und eine von Moffat persönlich signierte und nummerierte Valentine's Card. Für Fans des Schotten sicher ein must have.

Im Februar 2008 beeindruckte Moffat noch mit dem Album/Buch I Can Hear Your Heart und auch zeitgleich entstand How To Get To Heaven From Scotland, "the Best-Ofs one needed longer on the hob." Und das Warten hat sich gelohnt, Moffat und seine Best-Ofs bestechen mit brillant, einfachen und modern Folksongs, die schnell verzaubern. Moffat beschreibt die Songs des Albums wie folgt: "There's a lot of sunshine and happy endings on this record, plus as song about my grandfather's non-existent ghost and a lullaby about the terror of impending fatherhood. Hopefully I've managed to keep it at least diverting for the 37 minutes it lasts." Und interessant ist das Album allemal. Auch wenn Moffat jetzt schon wieder Pläne für die Zukunft schmiedet, allerdings ohne die Best-Ofs: "I'm currently of the notion that I won't make a record with the same band o runder the same name twice. My next album will most likely be one that I'm writing and recording with Bill Wells. I've also started a sequel to I Can Hear Your Heart, but it won't be any kind of conventional music album so I don't think that falls under the new rules. I reserve the right to change my mind anyway." Und dafür dankt der Hörer besser auch Moffat jedes Mal aufs Neue…
